Off-campus trips include National Parks, Pueblo feast days, local Native communities, and powwows. Outdoor activities include hiking, camping, cross-country, running, and stickball. Health, Safety, and Security Committee

The Health, Safety, and Security (HSS) Committee is a collaborative group of faculty, staff, and students organized to support the safety, health, and security goals of the IAIA community. The HSS reviews, analyzes, and provides policy and procedure recommendations to administrative committees and departments and provides relevant support for the Anonymous Safety Reports. This committee’s projects have recently included providing recommendations for security camera upgrades, investigating and recommending new alert systems, and organizing Occupational Safety Health Administration training for faculty and staff.

Campus Safety

To provide for the safety of all students, IAIA provides the following services:

Remind

Remind can deploy emergency alerts through text messaging, email, and its app. Remind will be used to share inclement weather alerts and other emergency alert messages related weather alerts and other emergency alert messages related to the campus and our museum, the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA). Signing up is easy and can be done via our website on the Emergency web page. Sign up for Remind via the direct IAIA link.

Security

IAIA contracts 24-hour security coverage through GardaWorld Security. Security personnel provide regular campus patrols, enforce campus regulations, monitor parking, assist with policy enforcement and campus crime investigation, and serve as a liaison with the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department. In addition, the IAIA security will provide on-campus safe walk escorts for students, faculty, and staff. Contact IAIA Security at (505) 702-4274 or (505) 428-5800.

Crime on Campus

Students, faculty, and staff should promptly report thefts, other incidents, and suspicious behavior or activity to security for investigation. Callers should be prepared to give the security officer their name, purpose of call, time, location, and contact number. During their normal duties, security may ask for student IDs or other identification. Students should be prepared to stop and show an ID at any time, including weekends and holidays, for the community’s safety. The IAIA Campus Crime Statistics Report and the IAIA Campus Safety and Fire Safety Report, which contain information about reportable criminal activities on campus, are available to the public. The campus community may obtain information about registered sex offenders in the New Mexico Sex Offenders. The IAIA Sexual Violence Prevention and Education Statement specifies IAIA’s policies and procedures on sex discrimination, sexual harassment, and sexual violence.

Winter Weather

Depending on the amount of snow or ice, a delay or campus closing may be issued by the IAIA President or designate. If a decision is made to close the campus or delay the opening, a text and/or e-mail message will be sent to all students, faculty, staff, and community members who have registered for the IAIA Emergency Services Remind Alert. This information is also available by calling the IAIA Inclement Weather Hotline at (505) 424-2363. New Mexico local TV stations will also announce closings and delays.

Anonymous Safety Report

The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) encourages individuals to report safety issues that they have experienced or observed. Individuals have the option to file a report anonymously or provide their contact information. The report will initiate an inquiry. IAIA respects confidentiality in all cases. Individuals can also send non-confidential email to safety@iaia.edu.

Student Clubs and Organizations

The possibilities for establishing student clubs and organizations are unlimited. A student group wanting to be registered as a student club organization must complete a registration form which is found on the Associated Student Government (ASG) bulletin board outside the ASG Office, located in the Student Union Building. ASG and Dean of Students approval is needed for all new clubs and organizations. Approved clubs and organizations are eligible for limited funding for activities and projects. View the list of active student clubs for the 2023–2024 school year.

Excerpt from the IAIA Student Handbook Appendix—ASG Constitution, pages 73-74:

Article X: Clubs and Organizations

  1. To obtain official recognition, clubs and organizations must present applications for club recognition, which is reviewed and approved by the officers, representatives, advisors, and the Dean of Students.
  2. In order to be recognized as an official club/organization, one representative must attend an ASG-sponsored meeting and receive a Club Financial Account and Requisition Procedure Packet.
  3. Approved IAIA clubs and organizations will elect one representative to the ASG who attends the meetings of the student government. The representative cannot vote on issues of the ASG unless the representative is already a voting member of the ASG.
  4. All treasurers of IAIA clubs and organizations must report financial statements to The ASG Treasurer.
  5. Approval of IAIA clubs and organizations will receive initial funding of $200 from the ASG. After this initial funding, clubs and organizations will be self-sustaining.
  6. No student can be excluded from joining a student club or organization.
  7. Student removal from a club is contingent upon ASG review. Unruly or disruptive behavior may be a basis for removal.

Article XI: Club Funding

All student organizations borrowing funds from the ASG are required to reimburse ASG before the semester ends or forfeit the remainder of the account balance.

  1. A club must present to ASG a report of what the club accomplished in both written and oral form. The written report should also be accompanied by an expense breakdown. A simple spreadsheet with dates, amounts, and purpose.
  2. ALL clubs are required to appoint a Treasurer as a single point of contact for financial matters before any funds are disbursed.
  3. A $500.00 ceiling will be implemented for club proposals for the first semester of an active club, with a graduated system of an additional $500.00 per semester up to $1,500.00 total if the club is in good standing and fulfills the proposal policies.
  4. Any club not fulfilling the requirements set forth by the ASG would automatically become ineligible for funds for the next semester. Beyond that, it is required that the club write a corrective action plan before being considered for funding again. If this plan satisfies the ASG, then they could be funded again at the low first-year rate of $500.00.
  5. A club can be dissolved at any point if the ASG deems it necessary.
